Along the way, you’ll pass several exciting spots, including a small waterfall, abandoned watermills, and the ruins of an ancient city-state. The trail is well-marked, but you should wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water and snacks.

Along the path, you can see the ruins of Lissos, including a temple dedicated to God Asklepios.

There is no entrance fee to enter the canyon, but visitors should be aware that there are no facilities along the trail and should come prepared with water and snacks.

There are also tours of the gorge with guides. So you can learn about the area’s history and natural features.

Ancient Lissos

Sougia Taxi & Minivan Services Vittorakis

Ancient Lissos

The ancient city of Lissos was a port of the ancient city of Elyros in the south of the prefecture of Chania in Crete. It was built in a small valley between ancient Syia, today’s Sougia, and Paleochora. Until today, its ruins are preserved. Lissos was a port of the Doric city of Elyros, located near the present village of Rodovani.

Elyros and its ports, Sougia and Lissos, flourished during the Hellenistic, Roman, and early Byzantine periods. Then, however, they were destroyed by the Saracen Arabs, who arrived from Spain.

Lissos also issued its currency, as did ancient Elyros. The coin of Lissos represents on one side the head of the goddess Artemis and on the other a dolphin.

Lissos and its Asclepion

In ancient times, Lissos was famous for its famous Asklepiion. Patients from all over Crete have been treated there thanks to the healing waters of the area.

A great earthquake destroyed the Asklepiion, but the mosaic floor of the temple depicting animals and geometric shapes is preserved.

You can visit and admire the Asklepiion, but don’t limit yourself to it. Continue your walk in the valley of Lissos, and you will discover capitals hidden in the bushes and the Roman cemetery with vaulted tombs (they look like tiny houses). A walk in the valley of Lissos will impress you. The area has ancient ruins, such as capitals, building foundations, marble fragments, and ruins of a Roman theater.

Someone found dozens of Lissos statues and coins in the area, evidence of the city’s development. The main ones are the statues of the Goddess of Health, Asclepius, and Pluto, which you will see today at the Archaeological Museum of Chania. There you will also find 20 statues found here by chance in 1957 by a shepherd looking for water for his flock. In no other city of Crete were found so many statues, except Gortyna, the capital of Crete during the Roman period.

The excavations at Lissos still need to complete. Indeed, many treasures are still there. The city experienced prosperity during the Hellenistic, Roman, and first Byzantine periods. Especially in the first Byzantine period, Lissos was the seat of a bishop, so it was a thriving city.

Near the sea is the church of Agios Kirikos, which was built on the site of an early Christian church of the 4th-5th century. Architectural elements from buildings of the ancient city are integrated into its walls. It is celebrated on July 15, when dozens of pilgrims spend the night from the previous day.

The beach in Lissos

Lissos has a beach with coarse pebbles, which is smaller than the beach in Sougia.

Festival in Lissos

As we said, Lissos has a small church dedicated to Agios Kyrykos, who celebrates on July 15. From the night before, the pilgrims arrive either by path or by boat from Sougia, stay here, watch the service, and enjoy the feast set up. Saint Kyrykos was killed at the age of only three, together with his mother, Saint Juliet, by the ruler of Tarsus in Asia Minor during the great persecution of Christians by the Roman emperor Diocletian.

How to get to Lissos

You have three options to go to Lissos:

1) By boat from Sougia: which offers a pleasant 20-minute sea ride.

2) Hiking from Sougia to Lissos (1.5 – 2 hours): The path starts from the port of Sougia. From here, you will enter a small canyon. Half an hour later, you will begin to climb the slope that will bring you high above Sougia.

Continue along the path, and later you will see Lissos below. Then visit Asklepiion, explore the valley, and return to Sougia by the same way or boat, which is much more relaxing.

3) Hiking from Paleochora (7 km): Another access to ancient Lissos is from the E4 trail from Paleochora. From Palaiochora, hikers can follow a well-marked path inland, gradually ascending the hills as they leave the coast behind. You can return to Paleochora with our taxi or in the summer you can take the ferry.

Tips for Hiking

These tips and tricks will help you get the most out of your trip to Samaria Gorge and Agia Irini Gorge:

Plan and be prepared: Research the terrain and weather in your hiking area. Bring the right gear, food, and water to stay safe and comfortable.

Stay on the trail: this way, you will avoid getting lost and damaging delicate vegetation. These trails are easier to follow and are less likely to lead you astray.

Tell someone where you are going: Tell a friend or family member which way you plan to go and when you expect to return.

Limited cell phone signal: Be aware that there are few or no phone signals at some low points along the trail. Not panic. Just stay on the path. Follow the marks or other people, and soon you will get a mobile signal to contact us.

Take a break: Get plenty of rest and drink water to stay hydrated.

Watch out for wild animals: Be aware of your surroundings and respect animals you may encounter.

Bring a map and compass: Even if you know the area, a map, and compass can help you find your way if you get lost.

Bring a first aid kit: Preparing for possible accidents or injuries is important.

Wear suitable clothing: Be sure to wear comfortable shoes with good grip, as the trail can be slippery in places. As temperatures in the canyon can vary, protect yourself from the sun by wearing layers and bringing a hat and sunscreen.

Bring plenty of water and snacks: There are not enough facilities along the trails. So it is important to bring enough water and snacks to stay hydrated and energized during the trek.

Start early: It is best to hike early in the morning to avoid heat and crowds. Samaria Gorge opens at 7 am, and we recommend starting at 9 am.

Take your time: Samaria Gorge and Agia Irini Gorge are stunning natural attractions. It would help if you took your time to enjoy the scenery and tranquility of the area. Take time to finish the hike, take a break and enjoy the beautiful view.

As we said in our previous article, Paleochora is located 70 kilometers south of Chania. It is indeed a quiet town and it will impress you from the first moment you arrive. This is because there is a great variety of activities and beaches in Paleochora to spend the most carefree and unforgettable vacation.

Beaches and Activities in Palaiochora

First and foremost, visit the Akrites Museum, located within the town, and explore the history of Paleochora. Just next to it and south of Paleochora is Fortezza Hill. There you can walk among the ruins of a small and historical building, the Venetian Castle of Celino or Selino. Also this is the perfect place where you can enjoy the beautiful sunrise or the amazing sunset.

Travel

An excellent activity in Paleochora is also to take the ferry ANENDYK and visit the other south coastal villages. So you can visit villages like Sougia, Agia Roumeli, Loutro, Chora Sfakion. Αnother additional interesting destination from Paleochora is Gavdos, the island of Calypso. Besides, from Paleochora on the south coast you can discover other beautiful beaches in Crete that are not accessible by car.

E4 path

We don’t forget to mention that the E4 European hiking trail passes through the area. That gives the opportunity to those who love hiking to admire beautiful and unique natural landscapes in an envy-free and clean environment. Starting from Paleochora, you can go west to Elafonissi through Lake Krios and Kedrodassos. From the east you can reach Lissos, Sougia and Sfakia as well as via Cape Crocodile.

Samaria Gorge

Ιn case you have not crossed the Samaria Gorge yet, it is time to do so. First, you need to reach Omalos and the entrance of Samaria Gorge. After the hike, you will reach Agia Roumeli, where you can take the ferry ANENDYK and go directly back to Paleochora.

Agia Irini Gorge

If Samaria Gorge seems difficult for you, there is also the alternative of Agia Irini Gorge. This one ends in Sougia and is also a great activity in Paleochora, whether you have a car or not. You just have to give it a try. For more details on how you can do it, check out our related article.

Explore

Explore the municipality of Kantanos Selinos with your vehicle and discover small and traditional mountain villages. After leaving Paleochora on the way to Kantanos, turn right and go straight to Azogyres Village. There you can visit the War Museum and the cave of the Holy Fathers. Otherwise you can drive to the east of Paleochora. There is a great road through the mountains and you will reach Anydroi. Don’t miss the famous “Cafe at School” with delicious food. Walk through the gorge of the same name and you will reach the beach of Gialiskari. Otherwise, take your car to Voutas, Kantanos and Plemeniana. There you turn right to Temenia, Rodovani, Kampanos, Koustogerako and Sougia. There are many small beauties of history and nature hidden there. Admire also many Byzantine churches that you will encounter on these wonderful routes.

Travelling with Taxi or Minivan E. Vittorakis in Sougia teaches you a little about the world and a lot about yourself.!

On a deep winter day, we took a ride from Chania airport to Sougia. We already turned up the heat before the pick up and we began our trip after loading the luggage. There were thick white clouds on the sky but no rain. Soon after, about a half hour driving, we saw some of them at the side of the road and our guests loved it

They had come for winter vacation so they hoped to see snow those days. When it was about time to arrive to our destination, Sougia, we also saw a small fox family crossing the road and one of our guests caught a very fast picture of them.

It was a fun ride We love to see the smiles on your faces when you first visit our beautiful place.

Turtle in Sougia beach

Sougia Taxi & Minivan Services

Last night, through photos posted by a friend on Facebook, a turtle was found, which trusted the hospitable east side of Sougia beach, apparently to lay her eggs. This area was immediately restricted and temporarily marked to protect the eggs.

Greece hosts the largest number of sea turtle nests in the entire Mediterranean. Especially hosts the most important species, the Caretta Caretta. One of the most important areas for their survival is our island, Crete.

Turtles in Crete

The beaches of Messara, Rethymnon and Chania are part of the Human Ecological Network Natura 2000 in Greece. The codes which are corresponding are GR4310004, GR4330004 and GR4340003 as they host the spawning of sea turtles.

In Greece the species of sea turtle Caretta (Caretta Caretta) is strictly protected by Greek law. There are 2 organizations that are active for the sea turtle doing an excellent and commendable work.

Sea Turtle Caretta

The size of a Caretta sea turtle can reach up to 100 cm, or rarely up to 120 cm. It usually weighs 100-150 kg but in exceptional cases can exceed 450 kg.

It can live from 45 – 65 years. For food it has mainly jellyfish, mollusks, crustaceans and rarely algae. Sea turtles can easily die by swallowing plastic bags thrown into the sea as they think they are jellyfish.

So it would be good to avoid throwing garbage in the seas and beaches. Otherwise if we still find some, collect them carefully using personal protective equipment and throw them in the trash.

After about 2 months that the turtles will hatch, they head to the sea and stay there for many years.

Then the adult female turtles return to the same beach and in turn lay their eggs.

The legend of Anthomallousa

What Can I Do In Sougia

Sougia Taxi & Minivan Services

It all started when the two best young men of Sougia claimed a beautiful daughter, Anthomallousa, with long blond hair.

In those years such disputes were settled by duel. But Anthomallousa, who deeply loved both young men, asked from each one of them to make a project. From the first young man had been asked to bring the road to the village and from the other young man had been asked to bring the water and the one who would finish his work first would make her his wife. But both young people worked equally hard, each with his own people from the village who helped them and showed great will for the immediate perfection of their work. However, both young men finished their work on the same day and the fear of a duel and the threat of a general conflict between the villagers began to prevail.

So one morning, Anthomallousa made the big and bad decision and after that was lost forever in the deep blue waters of the Libyan Sea.

Sougia is a destination of calm, serenity, and has a large beach with pebbles and crystal clear waters. As you climb this road, which is lush with pine trees, make frequent and short stops to admire from above the magnificent view of Sougia and the blue Libyan Sea. After about half an hour of walking you will reach the small and beautiful Byzantine and graphic chapel of Agia Irini where the view, the beauty and the serenity that exudes the landscape and the environment will compensate you worthily if you feel tired. You can visit it with your vehicle as long as it is elevated, but not loaded, or 4×4. It celebrates on May 5 and becomes a big festival with food and songs. It is worth visiting.

The path to Ancient Lissos is part of the European path E4 that starts from Sougia and ends in Paleochora or vice versa. It starts from the small and picturesque port of Sougia, we enter a small gorge and slowly we start to climb the mountain until we reach the hill above Sougia. Moving on the path after a while we will see Lissos below us. In Lissos visit the Asclepieion, the small church of Ai Kyrkos, the Roman cemetery with the vaulted tombs (small houses), the remains of the Roman Theater. It is an archeological site with many impressive monuments and rare flora. After a walk in the valley of Lissos, you will find the magnificent mosaic floors of the temple of Asclepieion with animal depictions and the impressive ancient ruins such as capitals, building foundations and pieces of marble scattered throughout the area. Your return can be made either following the same route back or call a Taxi Boat to have a more relaxing pleasant and short sea ride.

On July 15, Agios Kyrikos celebrates and the visitors arrive from the previous day by boat from Sougia, watch the liturgy, stay the night and have fun at the feast that takes place.

It is also called lakes as a thermal source of brackish water has been identified with an increased amount of radon, which is considered ideal for thermal baths.

By boat at the small port

Walk through the E4 path that leads from Sougia to Agia Roumeli

Right next to the coast is the church of Agios Antonis and Panagia Chilioarmenitissa. The name Chilioarmenitissa they say comes from the thousand candles that Virgin Mary sends every night to the sea, to guide safely the sailors. Every year it celebrates on January 17th and July 2nd. People are going by boat and spend the night in the countryside.

Cards are issued by your national health insurance provider.

Important – the European Health Insurance Card:

is not an alternative to travel insurance. It does not cover any private healthcare or costs such as a return flight to your home country or lost/stolen property

does not cover your costs if you are travelling for the express purpose of obtaining medical treatment

does not guarantee free services. As each country’s healthcare system is different services that cost nothing at home might not be free in another country.

Please note: when you move your habitual residence to another country, you should register with the S1 form instead of using the EHIC to receive medical care in your new country of habitual residence.
